It is thus manifest that English and Chinese
classes do not progress pari-passu: half the boys in Class IV being below, and over two-thirds of the boys in Classes VII and VIII being
above the required standard.
The conditions in Class IV have improved, and
will doubtless continue to do so. The large number of new boys with
low attainments in Chinese admitted annually to Classes V to VIL
militates against the success of a pari-cassu scheme,
In 1905, out of 371 new boys 326 were assigned
to Classes V to Vil.
